Former England boss Fabio Capello has backed Steven Gerrard to
turn around his managerial career after learning from his past
mistakes
Gerrard made a flying start to life in the dugout with Rangers,
winning the Scottish Premiership in 2021 and building the squad
which successor Gio van Bronckhorst took to the final of the
Europa League 12 months later. Things have been tougher for him
since, though.
The former England midfielder took over at Aston Villa in
November 2021 but lasted a little under a year with the Premier
League side. His spell with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq
didn't last much longer, and he left via mutual agreement
in January 2025 after 18 months in charge.
A return to Rangers has been touted, with former Gers star Ally
McCoist suggesting Gerrard could be one of multiple front-runners.
Barry Ferguson is currently in interim charge at Ibrox after
Philippe Clement's departure, and made an impressive
start in Europe with a 3-1 win away to Fenerbahce on
Thursday.
